Athlete Spotlight - Sophie Purvis
Meet Sophie!
Our January spotlight is focused on one of the hardest-working 5th graders we’ve come across. Sophie plays travel softball and although she’s young, you can tell that she’s going to have a bright future in the sport.
When I asked her what her favorite thing to do outside of sports was, she gave an answer we’re not used to hearing from middle schoolers, reading books.
In our last meeting, I asked the coaches for a few words that described Sophie, and here’s what we came up with.
Effort
Leadership
Attentiveness
Consistency
It goes without saying that if these are the four words our coaches came up with; she is the kind of athlete we love having in the gym.
Every day that Sophie comes in, she gives 100% effort. That isn’t an exaggeration either— she is always pushing the pace, ensuring others are following the drills, and raising the level of effort in everyone else in the gym. Her energy is contagious and she is a great role model for other athletes. We never have to explain things twice, she’s locked in and listening carefully to any directions. Sophie has been working with us since August, and her consistency and dedication are really starting to pay off.
We initially tested Sophie in August when she first started and then retested her earlier this month to see her progress.
10-Yard Dash improved from 8.67mph to 9.26mph.
Flying 10 improved from 10.54mph to 11.69mph.
The strives that she has made in such a short time are a testament to her work ethic and determination. We can’t wait to see the progress she’ll continue to make over the next few years. Stay tuned!
