Athlete Spotlight - Alexa Campion
Meet Alexa Campion!
Alexa is a Sophomore at Portsmouth High School and a competitive gymnast, representing Prestige Gymnastics.
Unfortunately, back in May of 2023, Alexa tore the ACL in her right knee. Shortly after, Alexa came in for her first session.
For the first few weeks, the focus was on strengthening the surrounding muscles and upper body strength.
Following her surgery in June, working with Ortho RI, we have implemented a customized plan for Alexa to return to full speed. The daily commitment and effort have led to a great recovery process.
In September she was cleared for dynamic movement and in January was cleared to return to sprinting. Even though she was medically cleared, we remained focused heavily on improving ankle alignment, hip strength, and confidence. We gradually built back up the capacity for sprinting, with her fully exerting 100% effort in February.
Testing has given us a great way to document progress, but what has been more exciting is the confidence and trust she now has in her right leg, allowing her to reach new abilities and return to competition stronger than when she left. Below are some of the testing results.
January ➡️ April
10 Yard Dash - 9.88 mph ↗️ 10.44mph
Flying 10 - 12.95mph ↗️ 13.47mph
Pull Ups - 12 ↗️ 16
Vertical Jump - 14” ↗️ 18”
Again, it’s great to see the numbers improve, but what’s more important here is the alignment and mental side of things. The consistency and effort she’s poured in is allowing her to move safely and confidently.
Alexa will return to the competition in December, competing at Level 9.
We recently posted a video documenting her recovery process on our Instagram, you can watch it here.
